Why Churros?

People ask me this all the time. Why churros? Of all the things in the world, why a churro? The answer is surprisingly simple, and surprisingly complicated.

IT STARTED WITH MY MOM

The first churro I ever had was at Disneyland. I don’t remember the ride. I don’t remember exactly where we were standing. I remember the churro. I remember my mom. I remember joy. Sometimes memory preserves the smallest things because they were attached to the biggest feelings.

THEN LIFE HAPPENED

The churro kept showing up. Different cities, countries, people, seasons of life. Eventually friends started sending pictures. I found one. This made me think of you. The churro stopped being dessert. It became connection.

It isn’t just a churro. It never was.

WHAT IS YOUR CHURRO?

Mine happens to be cinnamon and sugar. Yours might be coffee, a mountain trail, a ballpark, your grandmother’s kitchen, a song. The point was never the churro. The point is finding the thing that reminds you to stay fully alive.
